Student is reading, or listening- don't be afraid to stop!

Remember the WH questions?

Who, what, when, where, why, how?  Ensure comprehension with these questions after every page! Who are we reading about?  What happened on this page?  When does this book take place?  Be ready to point out words or visuals that may help your child get to the answer!

Remember what your child is interested in!

Find ways to actively engage!  If your child likes flowers and there are flowers on the page, ask the child to relate themselves the character.  If there are a lot of words, ask the child to pick the best word from the page.

Mom Reading a Book to her Daughter

Encourage your child to read as appropriate!

Depending on what your goal is for your child, have them read the whole book, words they know, or listen.  Encourage them to sound out words with your guidance.  Listening is great, but the empowerment to read will help your child grow.

Remember what predictions your child made!

Your pre-reading is important!  Your child can be empowered to read if their prediction was correct, or can revise their prediction as more knowledge is gained.  Remind your child of the knowledge they already have.
